After the Zoo of Northwest Florida was closed down in 2009, the community was unsure of what the future would hold. In 2010, the Gulf Breeze Zoo opened under a new name and new ownership. Since then, the Gulf Breeze Zoo has been a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
The zoo offers multiple hands-on encounters with animals under the supervision of trained and informative zookeepers. This is a great chance for kids and adults to get up close and personal with unusual animals, such as baby alligators and kangaroos. The zookeepers are always eager to answer any questions you may have!
One of the most exciting and popular exhibits at the zoo is the giraffe feeding exhibit. With some of the giraffes standing as tall as 18-feet, they bend their super long necks down and eat right out of the palm of your hand–just stop by the gift shop and pick up some giraffe approved food.
The “Meet a Keeper” program at the Gulf Breeze Zoo is a great way to see the animals and learn all about what the different keepers do day-to-day. The animals featured range from otters to tigers to camels. The talks are all scheduled to take place on the hour, so make sure you check the seasonal schedules.
If you’re looking to take a load off or get out of the sun for a few minutes, you’ll definitely want to take a ride on the Safari Express Train Ride. The train weaves through the 30 acre zoo grounds and gives you an up-close encounter with hippos, gorillas, zebras, and more. Since the entire train ride is narrated, it’s as informative as it is captivating.
Since working up an appetite is bound to happen during your day at the zoo, the Watering Hole Cafe is located on-site and has burgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders, and pizza–yum!
